Job ads increase by 11.1 per cent

The latest data from SEEK Employment Trends shows job ads were up by 11.1% year-on-year in August and the positive results were shared across most of the country.

As New Zealanders geared up for a nail-biting election, there was still plenty of focus on the nation’s employment market.

The majority of industries experienced year-on-year increases in August and growth was strong across all major cities.

“Our latest SEEK job ad data points to a growing New Zealand labour market with more opportunities on SEEK for Kiwis this August than the same period last year,” says Janet Faulding, General Manager for SEEK New Zealand.

Trends in mining and agriculture

Mining, resources and energy led the way for year-on-year job ad growth, followed by farming, animals and conservation, however Faulding notes the results were off a low base.

The mining, resources and energy industry grew by 53% year-on-year and the average advertised salary was $93,058. Power generation and distribution workers were among the most sought-after in the sector and the average advertised salary for these roles as $86,690. Mining operations also proved to be a popular role within the industry and the average advertised salary was $90,347.

Farming and agriculture continues to be New Zealand’s largest industry and job ads for the sector on SEEK were up by 46% year-on-year with an average advertised salary of $68,316. Workers were in demand in a number of areas of the industry, such as horticulture, where the average advertised salary for was $66,683, and veterinary services, which saw an average advertised salary was $70,195.

More opportunities in ICT

New Zealand’s ICT industry was among the greatest source of job opportunities on SEEK in August. They rose again by 1% year-on-year and the average advertised salary was $93,508.

Trades and services also experienced strong levels of advertising relative to the past five years. They increased by 19% year-on-year in August and the average advertised salary was $59,469.

Manufacturing, transport and logistics was also one of the greatest sources of job opportunities and job ads on SEEK were up by 30% compared to the same time last year. The average advertised salary was $66,152.

Job ads on SEEK for the education and training industry increased by 19% year-on-year for the three-month period from June to August and the average advertised salary was $69,927. The industry has recorded high levels of advertising relative to the past five years and the upward trend has continued over the past four months.

Faulding says the most job opportunities were found in tertiary teaching and early childhood teaching. “Advertising for both fields also enjoyed year-on-year growth, rising 15% year-on-year and 27% year-on-year respectively,” she adds.

While off a lower base, the greatest growth in advertising for June-August for the education and training industry was for childcare and outside school hours care roles, with job ads increasing 92% year-on-year.

“It’s no surprise there are more new job ads on SEEK for childcare professionals than 12 months ago,” says Faulding. “Childcare is a booming sector across New Zealand with an increasing demand for more centres and places.”

Trends across the regions

Of the major regions, Wellington recorded the strongest increase in job ads on SEEK in August, with year-on-year growth reaching 15.4%.

“Fuelling this uplift were industries such as information and communication technology (up 7% year-on-year), administration and office support (up 9% year-on-year) and government and defence (up 9% year-on-year),” says Faulding.

The Canterbury labour market has been recovering steadily since March this year and the promising results continued in August with job ads on SEEK rising 9.2% year-on-year. “Trades and services and manufacturing, transport and logistics remain the top advertising industries, up 8% year-on-year and 30% year-on-year respectively,” says Faulding.

“Advertising trends continue to be very positive in Auckland,” she adds. “They were up 5.9% year-on-year this August. The information and communication technology sector continues to offer the most job opportunities on SEEK across the region.”
